IT WAS a first day of books, pencils and playground games for 62 kindergarten and stage one pupils and for the school itself when Our Lady of the Angels Primary opened its gates last Monday.
The school was planned when the parish was founded in May 2007 and the first kindergarten class temporarily housed at Our Lady of the Rosary, Kellyville, last year.
Construction began last October and has resulted in modern classrooms equipped for 21st century learning.
Principal Eva La Rocca said she was thrilled with the new learning space.
``It's beautiful and the students were so happy, excited and eager to come to school,'' she said.
``There were a few tears but they dried up pretty quickly certainly among the children.''
There are four full-time and five part-time teachers at the school, which will expand next year to include pupils from kindergarten to year 4.
``The need for a school has been recognised for a while as the neighbouring Catholic schools can't meet the demand,'' Ms La Rocca said.
She said she was both humbled and honoured to be principal of the new school.
``It's a unique opportunity for all the staff members to build a community that's very much at the core of what we're about,'' she said.
